A new horizon for Buying Groups...

2011 saw a explosion in the number of buying groups coming onto the market.  All at a time when suppliers are increasingly questioning the value of buying groups and introducing new strategies for dealing with the 'buying group challenge.'

At the same time, Total Vet Solutions launched an alternative approach which has achieved incredible success.  "The whole model needed a shake-up" explains Total Vet Solutions MD, Ashley Gray.  "The whole industry needs to work together to mutual benefit and create genuine value for the vet (and pet owner).  Any model which simply seeks to exploit the channel cannot expect longevity."

"The Total Vet approach involves working with one selected ‘Preferred Supplier’ in each main purchasing category" explains Ashley.  "Members are still free to choose whichever suppliers they want, but they will have to negotiate their own independent deals if they are using 'non-preferred' suppliers."

Coupled with top-notch reporting, complete transparency and flexibility (members can opt-in or out of individual supplier deals), the approach is proving a hit with suppliers and our vet partners alike.  In only 4 months since launch the group has grown to 26 member practices and has a strong pipeline including vets currently using other buying groups.  Not only has Total Vet been able to demonstrate a more sustainable and transparent approach to vets but in many cases, members have seen that they are better off than with their previous buying group and switched over.

"Very importantly, suppliers are also seeing the benefit of working with us - there is active day-to-day communication between our Accounts Executives and the Territory Managers from the partnered suppliers.  We want to work together to drive sales in our members' practices.  The only way we will grow is to drive the channel collectively - the pie needs to get a lot bigger before we can all expect a decent slice!"
